Sunnyside Shines Launches ‘Holiday Window Contest’

Sunnyside Shines held an event at Bliss Plaza today to mark Small Business Saturday.

The organization set up a stand at Bliss Plaza (under the 46th Street subway station) where it distributed Sunnyside shopping holiday guides, gave away tote bags and announced the beginning of its Holiday Window Contest—a photo contest that encourages stores to decorate their windows.

The 10-page guides, which were released about a week ago, showcase what 22 local stores have to offer. Meanwhile, attendees at the today’s event received ‘Small Business Saturday’ tote bags among other items.

However, the photo contest was the most recent announcement.

The photo contest calls on residents and business owners to submit photos of their favorite holiday windows to Sunnyside Shines’ Facebook page.

“We are hoping to encourage local stores to create a festive holiday shopping environment,” said Rachel Thieme, executive director of the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District. “The contest is a fun way to engage community members and businesses to get into the ‘shop local’ holiday spirit.”

The store deemed to have the best window wins $300. Second and third prizes win $200 and $100 respectively. The winners are based on the number of votes they receive via Facebook.

Last year’s winners were Sunnyside Florist, Sunnyside Thrift Shop and Los Verdes NY.

Javier Quezada, the owner of Los Verdes, said at a recent meeting that the event is “cool because it unifies the community.”

The photographer who takes the photo of the store that wins will receive a $250 prize. For more details, click here for Holiday Window Contest.

The deadline to enter and vote is Dec. 24 by 5 p.m.
